Seva + Safari

with the Maasai

July 1-10, 2028

There are journeys that expand the mind, and there are journeys that open the heart. This retreat offers both, rooted in seva (selfless service), connection, and reverence for the land and its people.

The retreat will be held at Amini Life Africa, in their original Maasai lodge with sweeping views of Mount Kilimanjaro. This experience invites deep cultural immersion by connecting with Maasai traditions, volunteering alongside staff, engaging with schoolchildren, and supporting the local medical initiatives.

Opportunities to volunteer and even extend your trip to offer educational, medical or physical services can be organized. We will be organizing fundraisers and collecting donations ahead of this trip. If you would like to be involved in these efforts let us know.

In the middle of our stay, the journey expands into the wild heart of Tanzania with a 4-night, 5-day safari through two of Africa’s most iconic landscapes: the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater and the vast plains of Tarangire National Park. Days are shaped by the rhythms of the land with early morning game drives, wide open horizons, and the quiet awe of witnessing wildlife in its natural habitat. After the safari we return back to Amini to unwind and recharge.

Travel & Arrival

Guests will fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport, the main gateway to northern Tanzania. From there, Moshi is a short drive away. Those who wish to extend their journey are encouraged to arrive early or stay after in Moshi—a vibrant town known for its coffee culture, local markets, and views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

A Glimpse of the Rhythm

Each day is thoughtfully held, but also allows space for the unexpected!

  • Morning: quiet reflection, movement, or yoga practice

  • Daytime: service work or safari exploration

  • Evening: shared meals, rest, and integration

Africa moves at its own pace. This retreat is going to ask us to find presence over control and hold openness over expectation.

What to Expect

  • Long, beautiful safari days (some drives 6–8 hours)

  • Early mornings and cool evenings

  • Meaningful, hands-on service experiences

  • Immersion in nature, culture, and community

  • Jewelry making

  • Guided Maasai medicinal nature walks

  • Boma tour (traditional village)

  • Limited WiFi—an invitation to unplug and be fully present

This journey is best suited for those with an open heart, adaptable mindset, and willingness to step outside of comfort in meaningful ways.

Health, Safety & Entry

Travelers should consult a healthcare provider or resources like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for current recommendations. Vaccinations such as hepatitis A, typhoid, and (in some cases) yellow fever may be advised, along with malaria prevention.

A tourist visa is required for most travelers visiting Tanzania and can typically be obtained online or upon arrival. Passports should be valid for at least 6 months beyond travel dates.

Throughout the journey, experienced local guides and partners will be present to ensure safety, support, and cultural integrity.

Weather in July

July is part of Tanzania’s dry season, one of the most ideal times to visit. Days are generally sunny and mild, while mornings and evenings can be quite cool, especially in higher elevations like the crater. Expect temperatures ranging from the 50s°F in the early morning to the 70s°F during the day.
